Woodwinds

For young students who are hoping to play in their school band or orchestra, taking woodwind lessons is highly recommended. Here at Chapel Hill School of Musical Arts, we’re proud to work with students of all ages and with all kinds of goals.

One-on-One Attention

Many students are fortunate to have basic band instruction offered through their schools. However, nothing beats the one-on-one, undivided attention that comes with our woodwind lessons online or in our studio.
We employ skilled instructors who specialize in the student’s instrument of choice. Their knowledge, plus their careful, focused attention on each student allows for more individual understanding and growth than students could ever hope to achieve in a crowded group setting.

At CHSMA, students gain a true musical foundation. They’ll learn about breath management, correct use of embouchure (the use of the mouth and lips to create a full, clear tone without strain), and efficient, flexible fingering, all of which are crucial foundational skills for building a lifelong love of playing the woodwind instruments.

We teach a variety of woodwind instruments, including the clarinet, the flute, and the saxophone, all of which are considered staples of most musical ensembles.

Beginning Age?

We generally recommend that students be at least 8-9 years old to begin taking lessons. At this point, their adult teeth are in, which is recommended for successfully playing a woodwind instrument. Furthermore, most students at this age can usually read well and can handle the physical demands of playing a musical instrument.

However, we do understand that every student is different. So, if you’d like us to assess a young student, have questions about your own child’s readiness, or would like to learn more about our many different musical offerings, we invite you to contact us. Together, we can make beautiful music!
