The organic answer to a growing need in Chapel Hill…
When voice teacher Sharon Szymanski began teaching private lessons at home in 2000, she quickly realized that the demand for quality music instruction in Chapel Hill was very high and immediately hired additional teachers to meet it. Within a few years, she added professional instruction in piano and guitar and moved operations into a commercial space where Chapel Hill School of Musical Arts was born.
Today the school has a faculty of nearly 30 teachers and provides quality music instruction to hundreds of students each year, offering lessons in voice, piano, strings, orchestral and band instruments and many additional musical performances, activities and learning opportunities.
Our lovely two-story school is professionally outfitted and includes a large classroom, 16 studios for private lessons, comfortable indoor and outdoor waiting areas with wifi, and ample free parking. Administrators are on site to assist you with anything you need. Located on East Franklin Street, we are a convenient walk to Starbucks, Trader Joe’s and the Booker Creek Nature Trail.
CHSMA is dedicated to bringing students together with well-qualified, experienced teachers. Everyone faculty member has at least one degree, and many hold advanced or terminal degrees. Our teachers have the educational background and experience to adapt their instruction to the student’s goals. They are alumni of schools like Columbia University, Oberlin Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, Northwestern University, Meredith College, and UNC. In addition to English, we are proud to have faculty who can also teach in Spanish, German, French, Portuguese and Greek.
CHSMA is open 6 days a week with lessons available as early as 9AM on Saturdays to 9PM on weekday evenings. We serve a diverse student population when it comes to age, previous experience and personal goals. We believe that anyone, regardless of perceived skill, experience level or age can learn to sing or play a musical instrument. This has been our core philosophy from the beginning, and we still stand by it! We love having students of all ages take lessons with us. CHSMA is able to offer many scheduling options to families looking to balance music instruction with an optimized schedule.
We believe that anyone, regardless of perceived skill, experience level or age can learn to sing or play a musical instrument.
We are proud to offer our students a beautiful, well appointed facility in which to study music and the performing arts.
We are really proud of the work we get to do in the greater Chapel Hill community. But, just don’t take our word for it!
