Sofia Mourtisen

Teacher: Trumpet

Sofia Mouritsen was born and raised south of Charlotte, NC and began playing the trumpet at age 9. After a childhood full of music, Sofia entered Gettysburg College, where she studied trumpet at the Sunderman Conservatory. Sofia was an active member of numerous ensembles of various shapes and sizes and even got the chance to play with a local (French-speaking) brass band while studying abroad in Geneva, Switzerland! One of Sofia’s favorite things about playing the trumpet is showcasing its wide variety of styles and sounds – the trumpet is a lot more versatile than many people think! But more than anything, Sofia finds the most joy making music in community with others, whether they are playing quintet music in the Chapel Hill Brass Ensemble, setting the mood for swing dancers with the Ambassadors Big Band, or singing in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church choir. In their free time, Sofia enjoys hanging out with her pets, biking, reading, and learning how to play random new instruments.
